Comedy Provides Us with an Escape from Reality

What is a show without a stand-up comedy livening up the crowd with jokes and funny stories? Comedy shows are great curtain raisers and it certainly whets the appetite of the audience to expect more and more surprises. There are many kinds of comedies and each one is differentiated from the other by the choice of subject matter, the type of performer and the contextual form. Although the original aim of comedy is to inject humor or provoke laughter from the audience by talking about a topic in a farcical or satirical manner, some comedy may also contain political undertones and are highly dependent on the maturity and intelligence of the audiences to discern the content.

Comedies have been around for centuries and it grew out of people’s desire to bring entertainment and laughter into otherwise mundane situations. It simply reflect man’s natural tendency to use humor to trivialize and evade confronting the nagging issues of reality. In most improvisational comedy, the favorite topics are always the politicians and their blunders. Some comedies are told in good humor and the butt of the jokes sometime play along like a good sport. Fictitious characters or impersonations are an all time favorite and comedians love playing characters wearing outlandish clown costumes, brightly colored wigs, masks or moustache and other disguises. These types of comedy are highly popular among young children because they are attracted not only to the comic performance but they also enjoy the costume worn by the comedian.

Comedy has always been an effective escape from reality. It is one way to find relief when situations become overwhelming and depressing. That is the reason why people turn to entertainment as a form of relaxation and to use it as a temporary panacea to solve our problem. People use comedy as a vent for releasing pent up emotions such as when people break up a highly volatile confrontation by breaking into a joke. It can also be used as a tool for character assassination by disguising it as comedy. In authoritarian regimes, the content of comedy show is even thoroughly screened before allowing it to be performed to prevent counter propaganda against the government.

Unlike serious dramas or action packed filmed, comedy movies are well tolerated by people of all ages and are highly competitive with films of other genre. Male and female actors in comedy movies enjoy worldwide fan following and are well remembered by the characters they play such as Mr. Bean, Ace Ventura, Lucille Ball of “ I Love Lucy” fame and many more. It is truly amazing how many actors have shot into fame by portraying funny roles in the movie and many more are following in their footsteps in order to boost their acting career.
